Am Wochenende fand in Atlanta, Georgia die Verleihung der BET Hip Hop Awards statt, eine 2006 ins Leben gerufene Preisverleihung des US-amerikanischen TV-Senders BET (Black Entertainment). Moderiert wurde die Show von Westcoast-Legende Snoop Dogg alias Snoop Lion, und selbstverständlich fand sich im Civic Center so gut wie alles ein, was derzeit in der US-Hip-Hop-Szene Rang und Namen hat.
Ausgestrahlt wird die Award-Show in den USA zwar erst am 15. Oktober, die Liste der Nominierten sowie die Line-Ups der berühmt-berüchtigten BET Cyphers, gemischte Freestyle-Battle-Runden, sind aber schon bekanntgegeben worden. Die Gewinner wird man erst in zwei Wochen erfahren.
Auf die meisten Auszeichnungen hoffen darf Kendrick Lamar, der insgesamt satte 14 mal nominiert ist, aber auch Drake, Jay Z oder J. Cole sind potentielle Abräumer. Die Line-Ups der Cypher-Runden fallen wie gewohnt hochkarätig aus: Begleitet von DJ Premier sind unter anderem Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Joe Budden, Mariah Careys Ehemann Nick Cannon, Nelly sowie, für viele überraschend, Queen Bee Lil‘ Kim angetreten. Der von A$AP Rocky angeführte A$AP Mob bestritt einen eigenen Cypher.
